Libya – Question & Answer (30 June 2017)

Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing

Q - For Paris, General Haftar is part of the solution. Yet many independent sources point to the general’s uncontrollable character and his ambition to control Libya. Do you think you can force him to accept the oversight of a civilian authority as part of a political solution?

A - For France, it is a priority to restart the political process to reach on inclusive solution, based on the Skhirat agreement.

France welcomed the meeting between Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj and General Khalifa Haftar on May 2, which was a positive first step.

France fully supports the UN Secretary General’s new special envoy, Ghassan Salamé, who will fully assume his duties in the near future, and his efforts to promote dialogue between the Libyan parties – one aim being to build a unified Libyan army under civilian authority capable of controlling its territory and combating terrorism and trafficking of all kinds.
