Libya - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (12.06.17)

Q - According to the UN, the UAE violated the arms embargo and supplied combat helicopters to General Haftar’s forces. What is your position? Would you like the arms embargo in Libya to be lifted?

A - France is attached to ensuring full compliance with resolution 1970 and other relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

It also contributes to the EU’s EUNAVFOR MED operation SOPHIA aimed at implementing this embargo, which is key to establishing the conditions needed to restore stability in Libya.

There can be no military solution in Libya. The only way to ensure the territorial integrity of Libya and restore stability is through an inclusive political solution. Jean-Yves Le Drian is currently engaged in consultations on this issue with all of the stakeholders. He will have an opportunity to discuss it with the Algerian authorities today.
