The ambassadors and special envoys of the countries and organisations mentioned below welcome the expression of endorsement by members of the house of representatives (HoR) in which they declared their support for the government of national accord (GNA) proposed by the presidential council.
This declaration is an important signal that the majority of the members of the HoR are ready to formally endorse the GNA as outlined in the Libya political agreement. Those blocking further progress in the political process and the endorsement of a GNA act against the explicit will of the majority. We call on the president of the HoR to acknowledge the approval by a majority of MPs of the GNA and government programme.
We are concerned by the fact that the MPs’ statement mentions threats of violence and intimidation against members of the presidential council and the HoR. Such threats have no place in any democratic process.
We underline again the urgent need to establish a unity government in Libya to provide the security and stability that the Libyan people deserve. We stand ready to respond positively to requests from the GNA for support and assistance to improve the lives of all Libyans and to address Libya’s challenges in restoring security, the rule of law, and a functioning economy.
This statement is signed by the ambassadors of the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
