Libya – Participation of M. Jean-Yves Le Drian in the Palermo conference (13 November 2018)

On 13 November, M. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will participate in the Palermo conference organized by the Italian government, following on from the Paris conference of 29 May 2018.

France would like this conference - which is being held a few days after Mr Ghassan Salamé, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, set out his guidelines to the UN Security Council – to be a success. He announced the continuation of the National Conference Process, which must allow Libyans to decide on the holding of elections between the end of March and the end of June. France fully supports the mediation by Mr Salamé, who is working for an inclusive political solution sanctioned by elections, so that Libya’s stability can be restored.

Resolving the Libya crisis and its consequences for the economy, security and migration is a priority for France and Italy, and all Libya’s neighbours.

In such circumstances, the international community must express its unity and determination in supporting the efforts of the Libyan players and the action of the United Nations in Libya, in order to make it possible to end the status quo and enable stability to return.
