Libya – Jean-Yves Le Drian’s participation in the Libya Stability Support Conference - 21 October 2021

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, went to Tripoli today to meet Mohamed Menfi, Chairman of the Presidential Council, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, Prime Minister, and his own counterpart Najla Mangoush, and to participate in the Libya Stability Support Conference organized by the Government of National Unity.

The Minister urged all Libya’s leaders to conclude the political process embarked upon. He emphasized how important it is for the presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on 24 December, in accordance with the road map set by the Libyans and endorsed by the Security Council. He recalled our active efforts to that end, alongside the United Nations and our international partners.

M. Le Drian reaffirmed France’s commitment to the stability of Libya and the security of its neighbourhood, which have to include an end to foreign interference. He signalled his support for the work of the Libya Joint Military Commission, which recently adopted, under the aegis of the United Nations, an operational plan for the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libyan territory. The Minister recalled France’s determination to continue taking action to combat terrorism and migrant trafficking and support the dismantling of militias.

The Minister called for the continuation of international efforts to bring about a political transition in Libya and recalled that France will host a conference in Paris on 12 November 2021 at heads-of-State-and-government level, co-chaired with Italy and Germany, with the close involvement of the United Nations, in the presence of those taking part in the Berlin Process and all the countries in Libya’s neighbourhood.
