Libya - France assisting victims of the devasting floods (18 september 2023)

In the wake of the devastating floods in northeastern Libya on September 10 caused by Hurricane Daniel, France immediately mobilized its efforts in response to the Libyan authorities’ request for help for the victims of this disaster.

Our top priority is working alongside Libyan emergency services to provide medical and surgical assistance to the injured. In coordination with the Crisis and Support Center of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the French Civil Protection Service set up a field hospital in Derna and received its first patients on September 17. More than 50 rescue workers and first responders from the Civil Protection Service are working at this unit, which has an operating theater and hospital beds that can accommodate up to 100 patients per day.

France will also allocate €4 million to the UN for emergency aid and reconstruction in Libya. France is in touch with NGOs on the ground to assess their needs.

France expresses its absolute solidarity with the Libyan people at this difficult time and is standing by to respond to any additional requests from the Libyan authorities.
