Following the election of President Michel Aoun and the appointment of Saad Hariri as prime minister, the formation of the government opens a new chapter for Lebanon.
It is against this background that Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, visited Beirut from December 21 to 22 to meet with the new Lebanese authorities.
He met with President Michel Aoun, Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, and his counterpart Gebran Bassil.
He underscored the importance of preparing for new parliamentary elections in 2017, which will ensure that everyone is fairly represented. Only a return to the normal functioning of the country’s institutions will enable Lebanon to tackle the security, economic and humanitarian challenges it is facing.
Jean-Marc Ayrault reaffirmed France’s commitment alongside Lebanon, especially with respect to helping it strengthen the country’s security and improve the situation of the refugees.
