Jordan – Conversation between Catherine Colonna and her counterpart (01 Jun. 2022)

Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna spoke by telephone today with her Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi.

The minister reaffirmed France’s commitment to the strategic partnership between our countries. She reiterated our full support for Jordan as it tackles the security and economic challenges it is facing. She applauded tomorrow’s meeting of the EU-Jordan Association Council, a milestone for the bilateral relationship between the EU and Jordan.

The ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East and expressed their deep concern over the deterioration in the situation on the ground, and especially the recent outbreak of violence in Jerusalem. The minister stressed that only the two-state solution, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states, can lead to a just and lasting peace in the region, in keeping with international law and internationally agreed-upon parameters. She underscored the need to strictly abide by the historic status quo on the Holy Sites in Jerusalem and the importance of Jordan’s specific role to play in that regard.
