I condemn the adoption by the Israeli Parliament yesterday evening of a law aimed at legalizing thousands of homes built on private Palestinian land in the West Bank. This law notably secures the existence of dozens of settlements and outposts by offering them a legal basis for their future development.
UNSCR 2334 of December 23, 2016, clearly reaffirmed that settlement activity of any kind is illegal under international law.
This law further undermines the two-state solution, which, as reaffirmed by 75 countries and international organizations in Paris on January 15, is the only way to bring just and lasting peace to the Middle East.
It could further exacerbate tensions in the region.
I call on Israel to comply with its international obligations and to reconsider this law.
