France condemns the attack in the Old City of Jerusalem on October 3 that took the lives of two Israeli civilians. It also denounces the clashes in the West Bank, during which one Palestinian was killed and several dozen were injured. It offers its condolences to the victims’ families.
For months, we had been warning that the deadlock in the peace process could lead to a flare-up of violence. This latest outbreak unfortunately confirms our concerns.
Given the risk of a dangerous escalation, we urge all the parties to refrain from any action or statement that could aggravate tensions.
Reviving a credible political process is a matter of urgency, and would contribute to progress toward a just and lasting peace. France, which instigated a meeting of the expanded Quartet in New York, remains mobilized in this regard.
