Situation of Salah Hamouri - Q&A - (September 29, 2022)

Q: The French-Palestinian lawyer and human rights defender Salah Hamouri, who has been incarcerated since March, has been on a hunger strike since September 25 together with many other prisoners in administrative detention. The Israeli authorities have just placed Salah Hamouri in solitary confinement. He is currently in a 43-square-foot windowless cell with a mattress and a toilet. What concrete actions do you intend to take – beyond the usual consular visit and demands of Israel for explanations that you never receive – to end this denial of justice and this attack on human rights, as you do in other countries?

A: We continue to very closely monitor the situation of Salah Hamouri, who began a hunger strike on September 25.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs is mobilizing all of its efforts with regard to Salah Hamouri’s situation and is endeavoring to provide him with all possible assistance. He should be receiving another consular visit soon.

We have approached the Israeli authorities multiple times and at every level, from the Israeli ambassador in Paris to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, the Presidency and the office of the Prime Minister, to demand that all of Mr. Hamouri’s rights be respected and that he be able to exercise all legal remedies.

We want Salah Hamouri to be able to lead a normal life in Jerusalem, where he was born and where he lives, and for his wife and children to be allowed to rejoin him there.
