Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna spoke yesterday by telephone with her Palestinian counterpart, Riyad al Maliki.

The ministers reviewed the situation in Jerusalem and the West Bank. Ms. Colonna shared her concern over the deterioration in the situation on the ground, particularly the recent violence in Jerusalem and the deeply shocking death of the journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, who was killed while practicing her profession. She deplored the continuation of the settlement policy, which is illegal under international law, fuels violence and undermines the possibility of a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ms. Colonna reaffirmed France’s full commitment, alongside its partners, to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She reiterated that only the two-state solution, with both states living side-by-side within internationally recognized borders and with Jerusalem as their capital, can lead to a just and lasting peace in the region. France will continue to provide support for the building of a future Palestinian state by expanding bilateral cooperation.
