Middle East situation: President Macron is continuing his consultations to end hostilities (18 May 21)

President Macron is continuing his consultations to end hostilities in the Middle East.
He held a trilateral meeting with Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi and His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan. He also met with Tunisian President Kais Saied, whose country now has a seat on the United Nations Security Council.

He shared with each of them his deep concern about the evolution of the situation, the risks of extension of the conflict and the escalation of violence while there has already been a heavy human toll.

He spoke about the causes of the crisis, including the political stalemate between the Israelis and the Palestinians, as well as the growing tensions in Jerusalem in recent weeks.

President Macron once again condemned in the strongest terms the rocket attacks on Israel and its population, for which Hamas and other terrorist groups have claimed responsibility. He also expressed deep concern about the numerous losses of Palestinian civilians resulting from ongoing military operations and clashes with Israel. He stated that he would continue his efforts to ensure that the hostilities end at the earliest opportunity and a ceasefire is established. He would also like to see the United Nations Security Council agree to adopt a resolution to this end.
