Middle East - Q&A from the press briefing (31 January 2020)
Q: Has France changed its approach to Middle East peace by calling for “two sovereignties” now, instead of “two states,” as President Macron’s remarks in the daily newspaper Le Figaro imply? What does the notion of “two sovereignties” rather than two states mean?
A: France’s position on the parameters of peace is well known. We are convinced that the solution of two states living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognized borders, in accordance with international law and within the framework of internationally agreed parameters is necessary to achieve just and lasting peace in the Middle East. On this basis, any solution must be negotiated between both parties and France will continue its efforts in this direction.
