Israel – Settlement projects in the Jerusalem municipality (November 22, 2016)

The Jerusalem municipality has announced its intention to build 500 new homes near the settlement of Ramat Shlomo in East Jerusalem, partly on private land owned by Palestinians.

The construction of these buildings, which would be illegal, would separate East Jerusalem from the West Bank even more and would prejudge the final status which can only be decided through negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

The unabated continuation of the settlement policy only serves to increase tensions on the ground and undermines the prospects for achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.
