Q - Israel announced the construction of 2,500 settlement homes in the West Bank yesterday, the largest such announcement for months and just two days after the announcement of the decision to build 566 homes in East Jerusalem. What’s your response to this announcement? Does Israel, which, furthermore, refused to take part in the Quai d’Orsay’s initiative on resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, feel emboldened by the inauguration of Donald Trump as President of the United States?
A - The Israeli authorities yesterday approved plans to build more than 2,500 homes in the West Bank settlements. This decision is on top of the granting, on January 22, of building permits for 566 housing units in East Jerusalem.
This therefore represents, in just a few days, almost as many settlement homes as all those announced in 2016. We condemn these new developments, which are contrary to international law and are a very troubling sign.
UNSCR 2334 of December 23, 2016, reaffirmed that settlement activity is illegal under international law and called for its immediate and complete cessation.
