Iraq – Violence in Baghdad (February 11, 2017)

France condemns the violence perpetrated yesterday on the sidelines of the demonstrations on February 11 in Baghdad, which left several people dead and scores of others injured.

We extend our condolences to the victims’ families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.

France also condemns the rocket attacks carried out against Baghdad’s Green Zone on the same day. In this respect, we hope that the investigation being conducted by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi will shed full light on these two incidents.

France calls on the Iraqi government - to whom we reaffirm our full support - to continue to implement the reforms needed to ensure national reconciliation and promote stability in Iraq. While Iraq is engaged in the battle for Mosul, which could represent a turning point in the fight against Daesh, unity among the Iraqi people is critical.
