Iraq – Recapture of the town of Tal Afar (31 August 2017)

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced on August 31 that Tal Afar, northwest of Mosul, had been retaken from Daesh. This victory is a crucial step in reclaiming Iraqi territory.

Tel Afar, which has been occupied by Daesh since 2014, was a strategic crossing point into Syria and the territory that the terrorist organization occupies there. With the recapture of this town, Daesh has lost almost 90% of the territory occupied in Iraq at the height of its expansion.

France pays tribute to the courage of the Iraqi forces in the fight against terrorism. In support of these forces and alongside our partners in the international coalition, we will continue our efforts to fully liberate the Iraqi territory, while respecting international humanitarian law.

Thanks to this victory, Iraq is entering a phase of stabilization, national reconciliation and reconstruction in the liberated regions without which there can be no lasting victory over terrorism or return of the displaced populations.

France stands alongside Iraq at this critical stage. This was the reason for the joint visit to Iraq on August 26 by Jean-Yves Le Drian and Florence Parly during which a €430 million loan for the Iraqi government was confirmed.
