Iraq – Conversation between Jean-Yves Le Drian and Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi (7 October 2020)

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

Jean-Yves Le Drian underscored the need to put an end to the attacks against diplomatic missions in Iraq and welcomed the initial measures taken by Iraq in this respect. He expressed France’s support for Iraq in the context of the recent attacks, which claimed victims among the Iraqi population. The minister also reaffirmed his deep attachment to the preservation of Iraq’s stability, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He reaffirmed our continued commitment to international efforts to combat Daesh, in support of, and at the request of, the Iraqi authorities.

The minister said that he looked forward to the forthcoming visit to France by the Iraqi prime minister, which, following President Macron’s visit to Baghdad on September 2, will provide an opportunity to strengthen France’s support for Iraq and to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries in all areas.
