Iraq – Announcement of the recapture of Hawija (5 October 2017)

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced in Paris on October 5 during his joint press conference with President Macron that the city of Hawija had been liberated.

France welcomes this decisive victory, made possible thanks to the courage and sacrifice of the Iraqi forces, with the support of France and the international coalition. The recapture of the city of Hawija is a further step toward the complete liberation of the Iraqi territories under Daesh control and another victory for Iraq in the fight against terrorism.

Within the framework of the coalition, France will spare no effort to eradicate Daesh, through military means, from its last strongholds. It is working on the next stage: national reconciliation, the reconstruction and implementation of an inclusive government - the only way to prevent the resurgence of terrorism in other forms. This is the purpose of the “new partnership between Iraq and France” that President Macron is calling for.

It is with this in mind that Jean-Yves le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, signed an agreement on October 5 to provide a budgetary loan of €430 million to Iraq, in accordance with the announcement he made during his visit to Iraq on August 25 and 26. This loan will help secure international funding programs to support Iraq, which are critical in the reconstruction phase.
