Iraq - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (11.12.17)

Q - Following the Iraqi Prime Minister’s announcement of victory against Daesh, what does France plan to do?

A - We are continuing our effort to support Iraq in the challenges it is facing in the areas of security, national reconciliation, reconstruction, and the implementation of an inclusive government that benefits the entire population. This step will be crucial to preventing the resurgence of terrorism in the long term.

It was with this in mind that on October 5, during the Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to Paris, Jean-Yves le Drian signed an agreement granting a budget support loan of €430 million to Iraq, which will help facilitate the procurement of international funding programs. These are essential during the reconstruction phase.

Following up on this visit, which gave new momentum to our bilateral relations in every area, Minister of State attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne went to Baghdad on December 6 to chair the first joint economic commission since 2015. This commission is tasked with preparing for the establishment of new partnerships between our two countries with a view to rebuilding Iraq. Mr. Lemoyne was accompanied by a delegation of some 20 French companies that attended the meeting of the French-Iraq Business Club. Several of them already have a presence in Iraq and are taking part in the reconstruction effort (among them Suez, Thalès, Schneider Electric, Vinci Construction, and Bouygues Construction).
