Iraq (5 October 2019)

France is monitoring the situation in Iraq, including the protests that have taken place in Baghdad and several governorates in the south of the country. It extends its condolences to victims’ families and wishes the injured a speedy recovery.

France reiterates its commitment to the right to peacefully protest, as well as the importance of security forces responding proportionately. It encourages the Iraqi authorities to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the violence.

Iraq has long suffered the effects of war and terrorism. France supports the efforts of the Iraqi Government in the fields of stabilization, reconstruction and development of public services for the benefit of all Iraqi people. It welcomes Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi’s desire to respond to the Iraqi people’s legitimate aspirations to dignity, as well as his determination to establish the authority of a unifying and protective State, building on previous efforts.

It welcomes the Prime Minister’s call for unity and dialogue.
