I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Abbas Kiarostami today in Paris. Abbas Kiarostami, a leading filmmaker who was awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997 for his masterpiece “Taste of Cherry,” revolutionized Iranian cinema.
France pays tribute to this consummate artist who embodied the New Wave of Iranian cinema with his unique sense of poetry. He spread his unique vision of Iran all over the world, leaving his imprint on the history of cinema.
I extend my condolences to his family and friends. France has lost a friend; the world has lost a great artist.
