There are reports of an aggravated prison sentence for the Iranian human rights activist and attorney Nasrin Sotoudeh following a new trial conducted in her absence in December 2018.

France is concerned by this information and reiterates its commitment to the freedom of opinion and expression and the right of all to a fair trial. It calls on Iran to abide by its international commitments in this regard, specifically the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

A human rights activist in Iran and a winner of the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, Ms. Sotoudeh has used her skills as an attorney in the fight for women’s rights. President Macron recently praised her and expressed his support for her commitment by inviting her to join the G7’s Gender Equality Advisory Council.
