Q - Can you explain in a few words what the French strategy of being “firm and demanding” consists of with respect to ballistic and regional issues concerning Iran?
A - With Iran, there are three main subjects:
- The nuclear issue dealt with in the framework of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA), which is a solid, effective non-proliferation agreement. It must be preserved.
- Iranian ballistic policy, which does not abide by UNSC resolution 2231. The President broached this subject with his counterpart, Mr. Rouhani. We are cooperating closely with our European partners and UN Security Council members on this issue. We are concerned by recent statements by the Iranian authorities on this subject.
- Iran’s regional policy and our demand that it make a positive contribution to resolving Mideast crises. This is a topic that we are discussing candidly and in detail with our Iranian interlocutors. It is also a subject of close cooperation with our European partners and members of the Security Council.
Mr. Le Drian’s upcoming visit to Tehran will provide an opportunity to discuss these issues.
