Iran - Q&A (3 November 2022)

Q : U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will launch an initiative to remove Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women. What is France’s position?

A : France is deeply outraged by the Iranian authorities’ flagrant, systematic attacks on the rights of women and girls and the discrimination and brutal crackdown against them.

Along with its EU partners, it has already adopted targeted sanctions against those who are responsible for the crackdown that has led to several deaths in Iran in recent weeks.

France is also working closely with its partners to ensure that Iran is held to account with respect to its international commitments on human rights in every relevant multilateral forum. No nation must be able to divert these forums from their goals. This is obviously the case in the UN Commission on the Status of Women, where the question of Iran’s presence is being raised.
