Iran – EU Council adopts new sanctions (14 november 2022)

On November 14, the Council of the European Union adopted new sanctions against Iran, targeting three entities and 29 individuals responsible for serious human rights violations in that country during the violent crackdown currently under way.

The latest designations include the official television network, a company responsible for blocking the Internet in Iran, and heads of the Law Enforcement Forces and Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps involved in the crackdown at the national and local levels. These measures supplement the sanctions adopted on October 17 and previous designations under the Iran human rights sanction regime. They consist of a ban on entering the EU, an asset freeze and a prohibition on making funds or economic resources available to the listed individuals and entities.

These sanctions by the 27-member EU are part of our strong response – in cooperation with our British, American and Canadian partners – to the brutality of the crackdown, and we call on the Iranian authorities to end it immediately.
