Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is taking part in the extraordinary meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council, organized on the initiative of Josep Borrell, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in response to the most recent events in Libya and the Middle East.

The European ministers will address, as a matter of priority, the situation in Iraq, in the context of American-Iranian tensions evident over the last few days, with the aim of collectively calling for de-escalation, reaffirming our support for the efforts of the Global Coalition to combat Daesh, which absolutely must continue in Iraq and in Syria, as well as our strong attachment to the preservation of the JCPOA. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg will participate in part of this session.

The Libyan issue will also be addressed, in the presence of Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General Ghassan Salamé, in order to underscore the European Union’s commitment. The aim will be to call on all Libyan and international actors to demonstrate responsibility in order to return to a political process, the only way to break the deadlock; in this respect, the ministers will reaffirm the key role of UN mediation and the Berlin process in reaching a political solution in Libya.
