Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian spoke by phone on June 25 with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi.

He applauded Indonesia’s commitment to defending multilateralism, demonstrated at the UN Security Council where our countries share the same views as part of the Alliance for Multilateralism, which Indonesia joined as soon as it was established; and in the UN’s “health diplomacy” group, chaired by Indonesia this year, which led to productive discussions on responses to the Covid-19 pandemic. The two ministers expressed their desire to deepen our cooperation in such regional bodies as the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

The 70th anniversary of our bilateral relationship, which we are celebrating this year, should represent an opportunity to further intensify this relationship, in particular through the launch of a maritime dialogue and by strengthening our economic cooperation.
