India – Visit by Jean-Yves Le Drian (17-19 November 2017)

Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will visit India from November 17 to 19.

The Minister would like to advance our strategic partnership with India and prepare for President Macron’s upcoming visit.

He will meet with several Indian ministers, as well as with members of the business community. Mr. Le Drian will also hold discussions with French foreign trade advisors in India, who play a key role in developing trade between France and India.

India and France, which concluded a strategic partnership in 1998, maintain a trust-based relationship characterized by extensive cooperation in the areas of defense, security, counter-terrorism, civilian nuclear power and space, as well as by close economic ties thanks to the strong presence of French firms that invest and manufacture in India. These firms employ 300,000 people, have invested almost €20 billion in India and account for almost 1,000 operations throughout India.

Mr. Le Drian will discuss with his interlocutors prospects for developing our cooperation in all these areas, with special attention to two topics:

  • the establishment of a “partnership for the planet” in order to strengthen our joint environmental efforts;
  • the development of a “human partnership” in order to strengthen human exchanges between our two countries, notably with respect to student mobility (4,000 Indian students currently in France – with the goal of attracting 10,000 by 2020), tourists (more than 500,000 Indian tourists in France in 2016) and researchers and academics.

Lastly, Mr. Le Drian will inaugurate the “Experience” exhibition devoted to French-Indian relations and will take part in the launch in Jaipur of the 3rd edition of “Bonjour India.” This event, taking place from November 2017 to February 2018 in almost 33 Indian cities, will celebrate French innovation and creativity in all areas (culture, education and the economy).
