India – Meeting between Jean-Yves Le Drian and his counterpart (Paris, 18 June 2018)

On June 18, Jean-Yves Le Drian is hosting his Indian counterpart, Sushma Swaraj. Three months after President Macron’s state visit to India, from March 9 to 12, this meeting aims to move forward with the implementation of the goals established during that visit, 20 years after the conclusion of the strategic partnership between France and India.

Discussions will focus in particular on the implementation of the joint vision adopted in March 2018 on cooperation in the Indian Ocean, and on the establishment of an Indo-Pacific space that respects the principles of international law, to the benefit of the entire region.

Mr. Le Drian and Ms. Swaraj will discuss major international issues, including the Vienna agreement on the Iranian nuclear issue, and challenges in the fight against terrorism. They will in particular review the operational implementation of the International Solar Alliance, whose founding summit was co-chaired by the French President and the Indian Prime Minister on March 11, as well as the development of a Global Pact on the Environment.

In economic matters, our priority is on boosting trade (€9 billion in 2017) and strengthening France’s economic presence in India, especially in the area of sustainable urban development and energy. Our bilateral priorities also include stepping up exchanges between students, tourists, and researchers, and cultural cooperation (especially in film and publishing).
