India - Jean-Yves Le Drian attending French-Indian networking meetings between film and tourism industry professionals (Mumbai, 14 December 2018)

On December 14, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian gave the closing speeches at two French-Indian networking meetings between film and tourism industry professionals. The first such meeting was held in France last spring.

The world’s leading film producer, India also has a large domestic market that is seeking to diversify; this represents a considerable opportunity for France, the second-largest global exporter. This is particularly the case due to the rapid expansion of video-on-demand (VOD) in a country where more than 500 million users use the Internet mainly to watch videos.

On this occasion, the minister:

  • led a delegation of some 30 French professionals who had the opportunity to meet more than a hundred Indian producers and buyers.
  • announced the creation of a French-Indian fund to support the writing of screenplays. It will benefit mixed teams for French-Indian co-productions, which have strong commercial potential in both countries. The candidates selected will be announced on the sidelines of the 2019 Cannes film festival, and their projects will be presented to producers and investors during the networking meetings that will be held in India at the end of 2019.
  • announced the upcoming establishment of a French Committee for Indian Cinema to facilitate filming by Indian directors in France. This committee will bring together industry stakeholders and regional representatives to help France offer Indian professionals a comprehensive range of services. This committee is part of a strategy to bring together film and tourism industry professionals with French regional representatives, as filming in France generates substantial economic, media and tourism benefits. This was demonstrated by the success of Aditya Chopra’s Befikre, the first Indian movie entirely shot in France, which generated €8 million euros in spending in our country and showcased France to a very large Indian audience – the video of its title song alone got 493 million views on social media.

At the trade show for film professionals in Paris in January 2019, a partnership agreement will be signed by Atout France and Film France to support this ambition; it will have the backing of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and its network, which is responsible for foreign trade and France’s strategy in terms of its appeal to investors.
