France strongly condemns the shooting rampage in Port-au-Prince on 30 June which killed several civilians, including a woman human rights defender and a journalist. It expresses its condolences to the victims’ relatives and close friends and calls on the Haitian authorities to shed full light on this heinous crime and bring the perpetrators to justice.

This new shooting increases the tragic toll caused by fighting between armed groups which has taken place in the capital in recent weeks and already killed hundreds of people, forcing thousands of residents to flee districts blighted by gang violence.
France calls on the Haitian Government to take all necessary steps to protect the population, assist displaced people, end the armed groups’ activities and fight impunity. The country’s police force must be given unfailing support – particularly budgetary support – to fight these criminal gangs effectively.
