Haiti – Assassination of President Jovenel Moïse - Statement by Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs (7 July 2021)

I was stunned to learn of the assassination of Jovenel Moïse, President of Haiti, last night.

On France’s behalf, I extend my sincerest condolences to his family and the Haitian people.

I strongly condemn this despicable assassination. Full light must be shed on this crime, which comes amidst a very much deteriorated political and security climate. I ask all those involved in Haiti’s political life to show calm and restraint.

In these circumstances, I call on our nationals to exercise the utmost caution.
