Guinea - from the press briefing (24 Mar. 2020)

France is monitoring with concern the situation in Guinea, following the holding on Sunday, March 22, of parliamentary elections and a referendum on changes to the constitution. It condemns the acts of violence that led to the death of several Guineans that day.

The lack of inclusiveness in these elections and the absence of consensus regarding the electoral roll, as well the role played by members of the security and defense forces, which went beyond merely ensuring the safety of the process, meant that it was not possible to hold credible elections, allowing for a consensual result. France also notes the absence of regional and international observation in this double ballot.

France will support the initiatives proposed by ECOWAS, the African Union, the OIF and the United Nations aimed at defusing tensions in Guinea and swiftly re-establishing dialogue between all parties. It calls on all Guinean actors, regardless of who they are, to demonstrate a sense of responsibility and exercise restraint.
