Situation in Gabon - Statement by Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development (3 September 2016)

The release of the people who were being held at Jean Ping’s campaign headquarters is good news. France thanks Abdoulaye Bathily, United Nations Special Representative for Central Africa, for his action to bring this about.

France urges continued efforts to calm the situation in Gabon. Everything must be able to be done through legal and constitutional channels and violence must be avoided at all costs.

People expect all means of communication to be restored. France would like this to happen as soon as possible.

The aftermath of the presidential election in Gabon requires international mobilization. Among other things, France welcomes the fact that the matter has been referred to the African Union. It is pursuing its contacts with all its partners concerned.
