France congratulates Marija Pejčinović Burić on her election as secretary general of the Council of Europe.

Amélie de Montchalin, minister of State attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, congratulated her yesterday and wished her the utmost success in her new position at the head of a pan-European organization whose work is more necessary than ever to defending human rights on the continent and bringing Europeans closer together.

France, which will chair the Committee of Ministers until November 27, will be delighted to work closely with the new secretary general on our shared priorities and especially on strengthening the European system of human rights protections.

On September 18, Marija Pejčinović Burić will succeed Thorbjørn Jagland, who has served as secretary general since 2009, and whom France thanks for the work he has accomplished during his two terms and for the excellent relations he has maintained with our country.
