The two ministers laid the groundwork for upcoming high-level visits and held in-depth discussions on the most important regional issues:

  • Libya: they applauded the progress made in Tunis by mediator Ghassan Salamé, the UN secretary-general’s special representative, and reaffirmed their full support for the implementation of the plan he presented in New York during the UN General Assembly’s ministerial week. They agreed on the need for all Libyan actors to be part of this dyamic.
  • Syria: Jean-Yves Le Drian reviewed France’s efforts to establish a contact group, in order to move toward the goal – shared with Egypt – of a political solution to the Syrian conflict.
  • Palestinian Territories: Mr. Le Drian expressed his appreciation of Egypt’s initiative to promote inter-Palestinian reconciliation and applauded its initial results.
Mr. Le Drian and his counterpart expressed satisfaction with the strengthening of our bilateral relationship in recent years and reaffirmed their wish to further expand our cooperation in every area. The minister for Europe and foreign affairs reiterated France’s support for the economic reforms being carried out by Egypt.
