Democratic Republic of Congo – Situation in the Kasai provinces (20 April 2017)

France expresses its deep concern following the UN’s confirmation of the existence of new mass graves in the Kasai provinces.

We reaffirm our strong condemnation of the deadly violence and human rights abuses perpetrated in the Kasai region over the last few months, regardless of the perpetrators.

We again call for full light to be shed on these serious crimes, which, as the UN Security Council indicated, could constitute war crimes under international law.

France calls on the Congolese authorities to work in close collaboration with the UN to that end. We reiterate that the March 6 conclusions of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which called on the DRC government to immediately launch a credible and impartial investigation into these crimes in order to bring the perpetrators to justice and expressed the hope that an independent international inquiry could be launched to support this process.
