Democratic Republic of Congo – Sentencing of human rights activists (February 25, 2016)

France is concerned at the mandatory prison sentences handed down to six human rights activists in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In the run-up to major elections and in accordance with the Constitution, civil society must be able to take part in a calm democratic debate and political leaders must not be prevented from carrying out their activities.

We urge the Congolese authorities to respect fundamental freedoms, in accordance with the international commitments to which the Democratic Republic of Congo has subscribed.
