Q - The electoral commission of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced that the country would hold general elections on December 23, 2018. How do you respond to that? Is that too late?
A - France emphasizes the importance of conducting the electoral process in a manner that respects the consensus that existed when the political agreement was signed on December 31, 2016.
It reiterates its call for dialogue and the rejection of violence, as well as the need for the full and urgent implementation of the December 31st agreement, particularly the measures relating to easing political tensions, which is necessary to establishing the conditions for credible and inclusive elections.
The UN Security Council issued a press statement on this topic on October 30. It welcomed the offer by the Southern African Development Community, the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the African Union, and the European Union to form a coordinated team of experts to provide support for the preparation of elections.
