Democratic Republic of Congo – Human rights (23 August 2017)

France reiterates its deep concern over the deterioration in the human rights situation in Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the Kasai region.

We remind you that France has condemned the acts of violence that have been carried out in this region and demanded that all light be shed on the serious human rights violations committed so that their perpetrators, whoever they are, be brought to justice.

We call on the Congolese authorities to fully cooperate with the international experts appointed by the UN High Commissioner Human Rights to investigate human rights violations in the Kasai region in cooperation with the DRC, under the resolution adopted in June by the Human Rights Council.

As for last March’s murder of two UN experts, Zaida Catalán and Michael Sharp, France reiterates its call to thoroughly investigate this crime as well as the disappearance of two of their Congolese companions so that those responsible may be identified and brought to justice. Following the recommendations of the UN internal investigation group, France supports the UN Secretary-general’s swift establishment of a special investigative mechanism, as it has done several times in the past.
