Democratic Republic of Congo – Death of the two UN experts who went missing in the Kasai region – Statement by Jean-Marc Ayrault (Paris, March 29, 2017)

I was extremely saddened to learn of the death of the two UN experts who went missing in the Kasai-Central Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 12, 2017.

I would like to pay tribute to the memory of Michael Sharp and Zaida Catalan, who were killed while working to promote peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

I extend France’s heartfelt condolences to their families and friends. I expressed my sympathy to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres when I spoke to him on the phone yesterday.

France demands that full light be shed on this very serious incident in order to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

France reaffirms its full support for the UN Group of Experts on the Democratic Republic of Congo, whose members carry out essential work. It renews its condemnation of the deadly violence and human rights abuses in the Kasai region over the last few months.
