Democratic Republic of Congo – Attack on MONUSCO – Statement by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian (7 December 2017)

France condemns in the strongest possible terms the unprecedented attack on MONUSCO that took place in Semuliki, in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu Province. According to initial reports, it took the lives of 14 Tanzanian peacekeepers from the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), injured 53 others, and killed five members of the Congolese armed forces.

France offers its condolences to the victims’ families, to the Tanzanian and Congolese authorities, and to the UN. We wish those injured a speedy recovery.

France calls on the Congolese authorities to fully investigate this attack so that those responsible may be brought to justice. This despicable, cowardly action against men and women working for peace is a war crime and should absolutely not go unpunished.

France reiterates its full support for the work of MONUSCO and its contingents.
