Democratic Republic of Congo – Announcement of the provisional results of the presidential election (10 January 2019)
The Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) announced the provisional results of the presidential election of December 30 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As the minister said this morning, we welcome the commitment to democracy shown by the Congolese who voted in an atmosphere of calm. We also applaud the work done by the monitoring missions of regional organizations, the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union, and Congolese civil society.
As both the monitoring mission and the president of the African Union Commission said last week, we expect the democratic choice of the Congolese to be respected. If the presidential candidates wish to contest the provisional results and obtain greater clarity, they should do so using legal means.
We call on all the parties to preserve the calm that has prevailed since Election Day.
