France condemns the attack that took place on May 5 in the Beni region (North Kivu) which killed 2 Tanzanian peacekeepers and injured 13 soldiers serving with the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The perpetrators of these attacks must be brought to justice.
We extend our condolences to the victims’ families as well as to the Tanzanian authorities. France pays tribute to the commitment of Tanzanian soldiers to peacekeeping, the protection of civilians and the fight against armed groups in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Two days after shots were fired at a helicopter belonging to the UN mission and while fighting is escalating in North Kivu, these events underscore the need for strong and coordinated action by the Congolese army and MONUSCO to restore security in the Beni region.
