France regrets the fact that the Democratic Republic of Congo did not announce the presidential election within the constitutional deadline.
France calls on the Congolese authorities to accelerate the transparent preparations for the presidential election and therefore allow normal institutional life to return to normal.
The timetable must be made available as swiftly as possible and the elections held with as little delay as possible. It urges all parties to exercise restraint and calls on the authorities to respect public freedoms, especially the right to demonstrate peacefully. As previously underscored by the European Council in May, it is incumbent on all of the stakeholders involved to ensure this is the case.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has made progress that has been recognized by all over the last few years. The current political and institutional uncertainties jeopardize the sustainability of this progress and the country’s stability. France would like all actors to operate in accordance with UNSCR 2277 and to commit, through consensual dialogue, to finding a solution that will respect the aspirations of the Congolese people to elect their representatives.
