Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had a meeting on Tuesday 20 July with his Cypriot counterpart, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, at the latter’s request, and expressed his support to him following the announcements made during President Erdoğan’s visit to the northern part of Cyprus. France profoundly regrets this unilateral, uncoordinated initiative, which is a provocation and undermines the restoration of trust necessary for negotiations to be urgently resumed with a view to a fair, lasting settlement of the Cyprus issue. France, which holds the United Nations Security Council’s monthly presidency, is calling for full compliance with United Nations Security Council resolutions 550 and 789 and will raise the matter during tomorrow’s consultations on this. France reaffirms its commitment to the framework endorsed by the United Nations Security Council, based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation offering the two communities full guarantees of their political equality.
