Colombia – Declaration by the Spokesperson of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (31 August 2019)

France is concerned by the announcement that former fighters from the FARC guerrilla movement have taken up arms again.

The Colombian government and FARC courageously embarked on a peace process in 2016 with the support of the international community, to which the vast majority of former fighters have adhered. After more than 50 years of conflict, the various parties have made undeniable efforts which should continue. The announcement that former fighters have again engaged in armed conflict is not justifiable in this context.

The implementation of all components of the Peace Agreement must take priority to enable Colombia to return to sustainable peace. France reaffirms its full support for the mechanisms created by this Agreement and calls on all parties to respect their commitments. France stands alongside Colombia to help continue the efforts undertaken.
