Q. The Chinese Embassy strongly advised French senators not to visit to Taiwan, a trip that would “clearly violate the ‘One China’ policy and would send a false signal to ‘pro-independence forces in Taiwan,’” it wrote on its website, adding: “As members of a French government institution, French senators should of course abide by this policy and refrain from any kind of official contacts with Taiwanese authorities.” What is your reaction to these remarks to French parliamentarians?

A. French parliamentarians are free to make decisions about their own travel plans and contacts.
